SOAS PhD Scholarships

SOAS - the International School of Aquatic Sciences hereby invites applications for PhD scholarships. The successful candidates are expected to start in the beginning of 2007.

SOAS is an international PhD school with an elite graduate programme covering the entire range of topics within the aquatic sciences - from gene to ecosystem - ensuring the school a broad scientific basis. The main topics covered are:

  • Microbial Physiology, Ecology and Evolution
  • Sediment Biogeochemistry
  • Ecophysiology and Ecotoxicology
  • Population Ecology, Genetics and Molecular Ecology
  • Ecosystem Analysis

    Students are enrolled in SOAS through the PhD programmes of the two participating universities - University of Aarhus and University of Southern Denmark.

    The SOAS PhD scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. The scholarships will be available for PhD students enrolled in both three and four years' programmes.

    Applications should comply with the requirements of the university to which the candidate wish to be admitted. The admittance policy and the amount of money available for the Ph.D. projects may vary from one university to another. Contact a relevant SOAS key supervisor who will be able to provide you with more information concerning your chances of funding (see list of key supervisors and their research topics at www.SOAS.dk.) Applications must be written in English and submitted to the PhD committee of the university to which you wish to be enrolled. * To obtain financial support from SOAS please indicate on the PhD application form that you apply SOAS for support. Only in that case the university will forward a copy of the application to the SOAS admittance committee.     The PhD committees of the participating universities will evaluate the academic qualifications of the applicants. The SOAS admittance committee will provide the universities with a list of candidates eligible of support based on the relevance of the research project within the framework of the school. Founded on the academic qualifications and relevance of the research project PhD scholarships will be awarded the successful candidates.

    Successful candidates will be enrolled at one of the PhD programmes of the participating universities in accordance with the rules issued by the Ministry of Technology and Science and additional regulations issued by the universities. They will be employed in accordance with the agreement of November 25, 1997 between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Candidates receiving SOAS scholarships automatically register with the school. They are expected to participate in relevant courses and seminars arranged by SOAS and to contribute actively to the activities of the school.

    The closing dates for PhD application at the participating universities are:

    University of Aarhus: 15th November 2006 at noon.
    University of Southern Denmark: 16th. January 2007 at noon.

    SOAS Travel Grants

    SOAS offers support for travel to foreign students attending one of the SOAS graduate courses and to students staying in Denmark for short term research (SOAS Graduate Scholarships for foreign students).

    How to apply
    1. You are eligible to apply if:

    • you reside outside Denmark
    • you have been admitted to a PhD course that is part of the PhD course programme offered by SOAS
    • you are enrolled as a PhD student in a degree-granting institution in your home country


    2. Air travel should be at the lowest available rates. For trips up to 500 km surface transport should be used.

    3. A CV including a brief description of your research project should accompany your application.

    4. A supporting letter from your faculty advisor should accompany your application.

    5. A specified budget is required.

    Amount of Grant
    The number of travel grant is limited. The amount will vary depending on geographic location and other funding received by the recipient. The maximum amount awarded will be 2,000 - 3,000 DKK.
    However, to oversea students the maximum amount awarded will be up to 5,000 DKK.



    Application Deadline
    There is no specific deadline. All documentation must accompany the application or it will not be considered. The application should be sent by e-mail to: SOAS@biology.au.dk, enclosures should be attached.

    SOAS Graduate Scholarship for foreign students

    SOAS Graduate Scholarships offer opportunities to PhD-students from outside Denmark to short-term (up to three months) research at one of the universities or research institutions associated with SOAS (see www.SOAS.dk) - It is possible to apply for SOAS Travel Grants to cover (parts of) the travel expenses in connection with a research stay.

    How to apply
    1. You are eligible to apply if:

    • you reside outside Denmark.
    • you are enrolled as a PhD student in a degree-granting institution in your home country.

    2. A CV, including a brief description of your PhD project, should be submitted.

    3. A brief description of the project you have planned for your stay in Denmark is required.

    4. A letter of acceptance from the university/institution where the Scholarship is taking place is required.

    5. A supporting letter from your faculty advisor must accompany your application.

    Funding basis
    Funding is provided to cover living expenses. The amount awarded is fixed at 6,800 DKK per month for a maximum of 2-3 months. Scholarships of shorter duration will be awarded, and the amount will be reduced proportionally. Appr. five Scholarships will be available each year.

    Reporting
    A brief report (max. 1000 words), including details of the research activities performed during the stay, is required not later than three month after the scholarship is completed.
